Cholistan

Cholistan is a desert that lies thirty kilometers from Bahawalpur, Pakistan and covers about 16,000 kilometers. It joins the Thar Desert extending into India.Cholistan is derived from the Turkish word Chol, which means desert, so the full word means “The land of the Desert.”The people from

Cholistan live a nomadic life, moving from place to place in search of water and food. There is a dry riverbed running through the area called the Hakra River, among there civilization have been found.

ClimateThe average annual rainfall is only 12cm, this water is stored into troughs(a long shallow often V-shaped receptacle for the drinking water or feed of domestic animals)(Merriam Webster), built by the tribes, between sand wholes and din waterholes called tobas.HistoryThere were 300 Harrapan sites have been founded in the Hakra valley.Cholistan has changed dramatically over the times. This area was ounce turned into arid and desolate desert with drying up of River Hakra. But people can still find others living in houses made of mud and straw almost as they might have been living 200 years ago.PeopleThe people of Bahawalpur are very simple and loving, and have great faith in religion. They love music and singing. In the absence of other musical instruments even a Ghara, a pitcher, would keep the concert going.

The people of Cholistan call the place they live in the Rohi desert. The People of Cholistan also wear clothes too. Village women still wear heavy skirts made of 40 yards of cloth known as Cholas Hath Ghagra. Men wear long Cholas, also known as long shirts which are very colorful.Thar DesertThe Thar Desert is also known as the Great Indian Desert. It’s a large barren region in the north western part of the Indian subcontinent with an area of more than 200,000 square kilometers. The Thar Desert is the worlds 7th largest. This desert lies mostly in the Indian state of Rajasthan, and extends into southern portion of Haryana and Punjab States. The Cholistan Desert adjoins the Tar DesertThe area is affected by severe to very severe desertification due to poor vegetation cover, severe wind erosion and very severe soil salinity.

The grazing of livestock is uncontrolled, so, the pastures are overgrazed. The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources has converted the severe decertified land into productive land as a model on more than 100 ha at Dingarh Cholistan through sand dune fixation and stabilization by mechanical and vegetative means. The Cholistan dessert has been a large desert, and a lot populated! The Desert also has an Annual Jeep Rally, known as Annual Cholistan Jeep Rally.! Cholistan people move from one place to another and this is exciting! People there also have celebrations and have fun with different, fun games that they invent!
